Emerging Geospatial Trends: The Convergence of Technologies

Abstract: For decades there has been a debate about whether “Spatial was Special”. No matter how far back in history you go, geospatial analysis has always exploited whatever leading edge technology was available at the time. Whether it was the compass and the sextant helped man map the world, the first computers that enabled us to evolve from the printing press into the Information Age and the first geospatial information system, or workstations that enabled the GIS application, breakthroughs in geospatial analysis have been a result of the convergence of the leading technologies of the era. If the history of the past 20 years shows us anything, it is that the dominant information technology has become essential to how we work with and manage spatial information and that spatial technologies have become essential to the modern IT ecosystem. The growth in bandwidth growth, declining memory prices, developments in in-memory analytics and database processing, commodity scale-out computing architectures and the ubiquity of sensors and mobile devices have created a new technology landscape described by terms like Cloud, Big Data, Fast Data, and Internet of Things, all of which support and incorporate a new geospatial infrastructure.
